Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

How are teeth related to self-confidence?

A smile a day keeps your stress away. It is scientifically proven that smiling leads to release of endorphins which is a signal for your body to release the happy hormone. It keeps your stress levels reduced and boosts the immunity. But what if your smile is the reason for your stress?

The self-esteem of an individual fortunately or unfortunately is a lot connected to one’s physical appearance. Social media as an essential part of our lives, we are exposed to unattainable beauty standards more than ever. The race to achieve the perfect hourglass figure or model like a bright set of teeth is almost everyone’s goal now. It’s good to work for whiter and cleaner teeth which is equivalent to better oral hygiene.

Why is there a connection between self-confidence and teeth?

  • First impressions matter the most. Most of the time, people always notice your teeth first. So, it is only natural to connect your self-confidence with the appearance of your teeth.
  • Crooked teeth or malocclusion, missing tooth, yellowish or discoloured teeth or bad breath are some of the situations which might leave you with lowered confidence, anxiety and depression.
  • Any kind of pain related to teeth can act as a barrier for an individual to talk, smile or eat properly. This also leads to a sense of dissatisfaction.
  • The aesthetics of one’s teeth also affect their willingness to be part of social gatherings. If someone doesn’t feel confident about their appearance, it is hard for them to socialize and meet new people. A sense of aloofness can also develop.

One can either move on and not care about unattainable social media standards or push through these standards and just aim for a healthier oral hygiene routine.

What can you do for healthier and whiter teeth?

Work for better oral hygiene, the aesthetics will follow.

Regular dental check-ups: Just like regular body check-ups, perform regular dental check-ups as per your time and schedule. If you have any specific dental issue, keep a tab on that. Consult your trusted dentist for a proper oral hygiene routine.

Try therapy: If your physical appearance is bothering you and hampering your personal life, you should consider talk therapy with a professional to cope up with related aesthetic issues.

Still, dental check-ups and oral hygiene should be your top priorities.

Don’t fall for social media remedies: Social media not just portrays unattainable standards but also gives half-baked home remedies to achieve these standards. Usage of activated charcoal for teeth whitening is one of such trends. It has no scientific backing and is harmful to the tooth enamel in the long-run.

Thus, it is better to avoid such trends.

Stick to the basics: It is good sense to always stick to the basics of oral hygiene. Brush twice a day. Floss and rinse properly to remove any food leftovers in your mouth. Try to eat healthy in place of junk food.

Brush twice, Floss and rinse more for a beautiful wide smile.
